Washed Out

Light, medium and dark custom washes.

Each shade requires different processes to achieve the desired effect. Light wash is a stone-wash technique with pumice stones, and a light hand sanding. Medium wash is a regular water wash with light hand sanding. Dark wash is hand-whiskered and uses a pigment overdye with waterless wash technology that saves 10-11 gallons of water per pair.

The Process

The Cutter, who cuts the pattern pieces for every pair of Recessive Jeans by layering the denim into stacks—called plies—before using an electric fabric cutter. He then bundles each stack and sorts by size.

A factory technician sets wrinkles into the leg of a pair of jeans. Each raised surface will eventually be lightened during the washing process, forming faded wear lines.

After cutting and sewing, the denim is washed in enormous machines like this one. This washing drum, which process the dark-washed version of our Recessive Jeans, uses a new technology that is not only waterless, but also saves energy. Usual washing techniques consume about 10-11 gallons of water for every pair of jeans. The wash house reduced their overall annual water consumption by 30% by investing in this kind of technology.
